Orbital ordering in manganites and ruthenates

Hotta, Takashi; Dagotto, E.*

The crucial role of the orbital degree of freedom is here discussed in order to understand the complex spin and charge structures of transition metal oxides. For manganites, it is shown that diagonal charge stripes in the ferromagnetic phase are induced by the staggered orbital ordered pattern, while for ruthenates, a novel orbital ordering is found to exist in the G-type antiferromagnetic structure, with a hole arrangement as recently observed in X-ray experiments.

Electronic structure and the Fermi surface of UBe$$_{13}$$

UBe$$_{13}$$ is a typical heavy-fermion superconductor compound. The lowtemperature electronic specific heat coefficient has the anomalous large value, $$gamma_{exp}$$=1.1J/K$$^2$$mol, which is the largest among the heavy fermion uranium compounds. It also becomes the superconductor below T$$_C$$=0.85K. Therefore, UBe$$_{13}$$ is an important material as a strongly correlated electron system, and it is necessary to study from both sides of the theory and the experiment. The measurement suggests that the Fermi surface of UBe$$_{13}$$ may consist of small sheets. The energy band structure and the Fermi surface for UBe$$_{13}$$ are calculated by the relativistic linear APW method.

We have measuered NMR in the paramagnetic and antiferromagnetic states of UGa$$_{3}$$ in order to discuss the spin structure in the antiferromagnetic state.

The angular dependence of de Haas-van Alphen effect has been measured to reveal the electronic structure of filled skutterudite PrRu$$_4$$Sb$$_{12}$$. The angular dependence of de Haas-van Alphen frequency of PrRu$$_4$$Sb$$_{12}$$ is in good agreement with that of LaRu$$_4$$Sb$$_{12}$$. Compared with PrFe$$_4$$P$$_{12}$$, no anomalous enhancement of cyclotron effective mass has been observed in this system. This change of electronic structure is attributed to the difference in the $$c-f$$ hybridization strength, which is expected from the large difference in the lattice parameters.

De Haas-van Alphen effect in UIr

Yamamoto, Etsuji; Haga, Yoshinori; Shishido, Hiroaki*; Nakawaki, Hirokazu*; Inada, Yoshihiko*; Settai, Rikio*; Onuki, Yoshichika

Physica B; Condensed Matter, 312-313, p.302 - 303, 2002/03

We have succeeded in growing a high-quality single crystal of UIr with the monoclinic structure by the Czochralski pulling method in a tetra-arc furnace. UIr is a ferromagnetic compound. Its Curie temperature $$T_C$$ is 46 K and the magnetic moment is found to be oriented along the [1 0 $=1] direction by the magnetization measurement. The magnetic moment is 0.5 $mu_{rm B}$$/U. We have observed the de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillation. All the detected branches have heavy cyclotron effective masses ranging from 9.6 to 32 $$m_0$$. They are consistent with the electronic specific heat coefficient $$gamma$$=48.5 mJ/K$$^2cdot$$mol.
